In an alert message released on 13 November, US diplomatic authorities warned their nationals of an increased risk of jihadist attacks along the country’s southern border, including in Mtwara. These attacks are said to be carried out by Islamic extremists from Mozambique.

In the same context, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 9 November that a « red » alert, (level 2 of 4), applies to the same region due to the increasing risks of violence. Citizens are recommended to leave the area « except in case of necessity ».

It is recommended to avoid all travel along the southern border.
