According to the local press, clashes are under way in Plaza San Martín after the inauguration of the President of the Parliament Manuel Merino as President of the Republic, until the end of the mandate of President Martin Vizcarra, 28 July 2021, dismissed for « moral incapacity ». Protesters trying to access Plaza de Armas have been quelled by security forces. Several people were reportedly arrested.
According to the same source, violent clashes also broke out across the country, notably in Serco, Arequipa, Lambayeque and Cusco. In the capital, riot control forces used tear gas in response to the throwing of stones and objects by protesters.
Martin Vizcarra was dismissed on 9 November for « moral incompetence » over an alleged corruption case stemming from accusations of receiving bribes while he was governor of the southern region of Moquegua in 2014. Congress voted for his departure with 105 votes in favor, 19 against and 4 abstentions, far exceeding the 87 votes needed to remove him from his highest office.
An ongoing of the demonstrations is to be anticipated in the coming days.
