According to local sources, clashes broke out on 19 November in the Mehmoodabad area of Karachi, on the fringes of a demonstration in protest against the destruction of several hundred illegal houses in the district.
The demolition team dispatched by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was reportedly stoned by angry demonstrators on arrival at the site. Major disruptions in travel were also reported in the area.
Demolition work was postponed to a later date. According to the municipality, these illegal dwellings are preventing the proper evacuation of rainwater and waste water.
Further mobilization and possible new violence is expected in the coming days in the area.
