In several messages relayed on Telegram, the Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility on 3 November for the shootings in the centre of Vienna that occurred the day before. The attack killed at least 4 people and injured 15 others, 3 of them seriously.

The assailant opened fire at several points in the city centre in the early evening of 2 November, including near the Stadttempel Synagogue and the Opera House. The terrorist was shot dead by the Austrian police. He was armed with a rifle, a machete and a dummy explosive belt. The trail of fleeing assailants has been cleared.

The Austrian Minister of the Interior further reported that 18 searches and 14 arrests had been carried out on 3 November. Two men were also arrested in Switzerland, near Zurich.

Further security reinforcement is to be expected in the coming days.
