17 November is the anniversary of the student uprising at Athens Polytechnic in 1973, which led to the end of the Regime of the Colonels.
Commemorations and demonstrations are held on the anniversary each year and are often accompanied by tension.
In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the authorities have banned all gatherings of more than 3 people from 15 to 19 November, stressing a « serious danger to public health ». However, demonstrations should still be expected given that the decision has met with fierce criticism, notably from the opposition.
In Athens, the traditional march scheduled from Klafthmonos Square to the US Embassy from 14:00 local time should still go ahead.
In Thessaloniki, a rally will get underway at Aristotle University at 15:30 local time.
Rallies should be expected in other cities in the country.
Security reinforcements should be expected, especially in Athens. Unrest should not be ruled out, notably in the event of police intervention.
